Recovery tips after wisdom teeth removal

After wisdom teeth removal, there are some important healing tips that can help you recover quickly.

However, one thing you should know everyone heals differently. Wisdom teeth healing process varies from one person to another.

Depending on the way your wisdom tooth was pulled out, you may experience swelling, pain, and bruises.

The major concern most patients have after wisdom teeth removal is the pain.

Even with the painkillers prescribed by your oral surgeon, sometimes the pain can be so severe after the local anesthesia has ended.

Here are Important Healing Tips after wisdom teeth removal.

Below are Wisdom teeth removal recovery tips that will help you heal quickly.

Pain

Pain is usually at its worst after 24-48 hours after wisdom teeth surgery.

Some patients experience less to no pain while others have severe pain. However, this pain will reduce more and more each day afterward.

Usually, your dentist subscribes pain relievers that may help you during this period.

If your pain persists and becomes intense 7-10 days after wisdom teeth removal, you may go back to your doctor immediately.

The pain may be a symptom of a serious condition called Dry socket.

Bleeding.

Bleeding is expected immediately after surgery. Your oral surgeon places a gauze on the socket to control bleeding and the gauze should be removed 30-45 minutes.

If your bleeding persists you should go back to the dentist for a further check-up.

Sometimes the bleeding may be caused by a more serious underlying problem. Here is what to do if your extracted tooth won’t stop bleeding.

Diet.

Diet is very important when it comes to wisdom teeth recovery.

You should take more fluids and soft foods that may scratch the wound.

Alcohol and smoking cigarette MUST be avoided as they may delay the healing process.

You can start rinsing your mouth after 24hours with a solution of warm water and salt to enable you to recover quickly.

What not to do when wisdom teeth removed.

  • Avoid using a straw while taking drinks as the sucking may dislodge the blood clot leading to more bleeding and infection.
  • Do not vigorously rinse your mouth during the fast day after wisdom teeth removal.
  • Avoid alcohol and cigarette smoking completely as they may dissolve the blood clot exposing your jawbone to infections.
  • Don’t eat crunchy, hard foods that may scratch your wounds.
  • Avoid heavy physical exercises that may stimulate blood leading to more bleeding.

NB: Always follow Your oral surgeon’s instructions to the latter for you to recover quickly.

Sometime your dentist may place sutures on the jawbone or surgery area to reduce post-operative bleeding.

In addition, keep your oral hygiene clean to avoid infections in the surgery area.
