Textured or Smooth Implants which one should you go for?

Breast implants come in two different texture surface; Smooth and rough silicone gel implants. Patients are required to chose either the textured or smooth implants.

Each of the textures has its advantages and disadvantages.

Once you are ready to go for a breast augmentation surgery it is good to know their differences to help you chose the right implant for yourself.

Difference between Textured and Smooth implants.

Textured breast implants have an outer silicon rubber that is a rough and irregular surface. Their texture feels like a fine sandpaper.

The smooth implants have a smooth outer silicone rubber cover that is slippery and shiny.

Each implant is designed to suit different patients, it is good to consult your cosmetic surgeon before choosing one.

Textured implants are designed with a rough outer rubber silicone to lower the risks of Capsular Contracture a condition where an internal scar tissue forms a tight capsule around a breast implant making it hard.

Secondly, textured implants prevent anatomic implants a condition called “flipping over“. The rough texture prevents the implant from moving inside the membrane pocket created by a surgeon.

Do Textured breast implants cause Cancer?

Well, this is one of the common questions asked by different patients before they chose their preferred implant. There has been a lot of debate whether the textured implants cause cancer.

However, according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), women with textured implants have been reported to be at higher chances of contracting breast cancer.

Up to 359 cases of patients with breast implants have been reported to have contracted large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) in the US alone.

There are also reported cases of 9 people who have died from the same. This, however, indicates a strong link of Textured implants causing lymphoma.

Note: If you experience an usual feeling that is a pain, swelling, lumps or asymmetry call your doctor immediately. More so if the implants were placed some years back.

Do round textured implants drop?

The answer to this question is Yes.This comes up after a number of customers who have used textured implants came complaining.

Smooth Breast Implants.

Majority of women and plastic surgeons prefer smooth breast implants. This is because of a number of factors. Below are some of the reasons why smooth implants are commonly used.

  • The cost for Smooth breast implants is lower than their counterparts. This is because they are common and readily available.
  • Smooth implants have a thin skin making them feel softer.
  • Usually, once they have been fitted they have lower chances of riffling.

If you’re deciding which implants to pursue, it is highly recommended to consult with your doctor first. About the cost, smooth implants are cheaper than the textured implants.

Also, textured implants are said to ripple and leak more compared to smooth implants.
